Gas analysis is an important factor within the glass industry when it comes to the management of all production processes - from raw material handling and silo monitoring, to glass melting furnace, and onwards to transport, forming and annealing stages, as indicated in the box above. Gas analysis plays a significant role in developing process control for different stages of production. The main function of process control is to optimise the whole process with regard to energy and material usage as well as product quality:

  • Evaluation and management of a production process
  • Influence of measured parameters on key operational performance
  • Critically important gas compositions i.e. for energy consumption (fuel/air ratio)
  • Risk and hazard management associated with toxic gases
  • Knowledge of reaction yield through by-product analysis

Also highly important is the control of explosion risk. Here, the absence of oxygen and the lower explosion limits (LEL) of gases are fundamental.

Analytical processes provide important information on the characteristics and quality of a product. Also gas emissions from raw materials are measurable, i.e. sulfur dioxide. Manufacturing processes can proceed in an environment of fluctuating and extremely high temperatures. Varying gas humidity, acid dew-point and corrosivity present further challenges, as do high dust concentrations and uneven particle size distribution. Even selenium is traceable if conditioned properly in front of an analyser.
